PROJECT 8 : PERFORMANCE & AWARDS NIGHT

Finally, here comes the very last project of RUS104, which symbolizes the end of my 1st semester in HBP, USM. For Project 8, we are required to perform (either dancing, singing, etc) based on the theme given, that is 'The 7 Kingdoms'. We, the quantity survey students, were given the kingdom Majapahit, in which I had learnt about it before during secondary school.
For our performance, we had decided to dance based on the song : Asmaradana. All the QS members met and we discussed about our roles in dancing. Thanks to our groupmate, Nala, she managed to find us a dance tutor who is also studying in USM as a first year student. During the four days of preparation, we had stayed up late almost every nights to practice dancing. We had also formed a big 'QS Group' to go to a shopping mall at Bukit Jambul to buy our costumes.
On the performance night, all of us were very tensed and nervous. However, all of us were able to perform perfectly and we had successfully attracted all the audiences. Finally, it was around 12 o'clock in the midnight and the event ends. It was time to say goodbye to RUS104. I was amazed at the moment that time flies and I managed to survive RUS104 , courageously. Well, I have some words for u, RUS104 : I WILL REMEMBER YOU, BUT I WON'T MISS YOU.  Thanks.
 Cool & Steady

PROJECT 7: EXHIBITION

For Project 7, all the 1st year students were divided into groups based on their respective major. Hence, I am automatically in the Quantity Surveying group.
For this exhibition, we were required to set up a booth and decorate it with our products from Project 1 till Project 6. Hence, all the QS members gathered and discussed about our respective jobs. With the co-operation of all of the members, we had successfully decorated our booth and I personally feel very satisfied with it.

The very cool banner that we had made in a banner shop in Georgetown.

Our booth. Simple and nice.

I feel satisfied and happy with this project as it greatly helps to improve the relationship between the students from their respective courses. For me, I got to know more about my course mates from different races and I manage to interact with them well. It is nice to know more people.

PROJECT 6: INTEGRATED PROJECT: DESIGN & BUILD ‘AN AMPHITHEATRE STAGE (Project 6b: Project Report)

  • Each group is required to prepare two types of project report for their proposed ‘Amphitheatre Stage’, which are:

  1. Progress Report
  2. Design Proposal Report (Final Report)

There are many things to be included in these reports.
For the ‘Proposed Design Development’ part, students are encouraged to just reduce the A1 size presentation drawing board to A3 size presentation drawing paper and attached it as Appendix A in the report.
For the construction method, students need to mention the type (traditional/conventional, modular, IBS, mixed etc.), propose the superstructure and substructure used and explain the rationales why the method of construction is selected.
For the ‘material selection’, students need to mention the material selected for roof, floor area, stage background (if any) and all applied structures (column, roof structure, shading device, base etc.) together with the detailing of structural joints (3 details).
For building services, students should focus on lighting system, sound and Public Address (PA) system.
As simple estimation budget for the stage construction, each group need to provide an Elemental Cost Analysis (ECA) that consider the structure, finishes and basic services of their project.  In addition to ECA, each group also needs to provide estimation cost for their physical scale model construction (Model Cost Estimate) of their STAGE.  In the report, each group needs to provide its own project scheduling and management plan. Besides, each group also needs to state the role of each group members, organization chart of the Group and simple gantt chart (reporting on the project).

From here, I had learnt about many different things in which other courses/major will learn. With this, it enables me to gain more knowledge about it and I believe that it is going to be very useful for me.

PROJECT 6: INTEGRATED PROJECT: DESIGN & BUILD ‘AN AMPHITHEATRE STAGE (Project 6a: Amphitheatre Stage Design)

  •    In a group of 16 members, all 12 groups of RUS104 need to design an amphitheatre with the topography condition of the given site (next to the end of the HBP E08 Studio Block facing the Penang Bridge) and tropical climate of Malaysia which is characterized by heavy rain, intense sunshine, windless condition etc.
  •   The presentation drawings of the proposed amphitheatre stage design should consists of:

-          Key Plan (NTS) and Location Plan (NTS)
-          Site Inventory (NTS)
-          Conceptual Design sketches and relevant bubble diagrams
-          Site Plan (with roof plan of the stage and landscapes) (1:100 scale)
-          Floor Plan (1:50 scale) (along with the dimensions & specifications)
-          Elevations - Front, Rear, Right & Left Sides (1:50 scale)
-          Horizontal and Longitudinal Sections (1:50 scale)
-          3 Details of structural joints (1:20 scale)
-          at least 3 Perspectives drawings

I am so excited to be grouped with friends from different courses and races. With this, I hope that we can interact more especially between different races about the cultures of each others to minimize the understanding of each others.

For this project, we are required to discuss, design and draw the amphitheatre. I had been elected to be in the costing group which suites the course/major that I am now studying in, that is quantity surveying. I hope that I can learn a lot from it .

I had involved in many discussions and I helped in drawing and colouring of the detail drawings. These are the drawings produced by my team :

PROJECT 5 : SENSE OF PLACE: NEIGHBOURHOOD & COMMUNITY ( Project 5b: Neighbourhood Elements: Proposed Improvement )

§  Based on the self-visit to the chosen neighbourhood area (where its current condition is presented in Project 5a), students should propose some suggestions to improve the physical and non-physical conditions of the neighbourhood area by presenting it graphically in the Project 5b.
§  By using annotated sketches and some descriptions (hand-written), students should make some suggestions for the improvement of:
i)                     Movement Network (vehicular circulation, pathways for pedestrian, cyclist and disabled etc.)
ii)                   Lot Layout
iii)                  Public Open Space
iv)                  Public Facilities and Amenities

v)                   Landscape and Street Furniture.

There are some improvements and suggestions from me to Siara 81 after I had made numerous site visit to the place. For example, the security system of the area should be improved as the security system is not strong enough where outsiders can easily enter the housing area.

This is the drawing of the Proposed Improvement that I had done :

PROJECT 5 : SENSE OF PLACE: NEIGHBOURHOOD & COMMUNITY ( Project 5a: Neighbourhood Elements: Existing Condition )

§  On A2-size presentation board, students should draw the Key Plan (NTS – Not To Scale), the Location Plan (NTS) and the Layout Plan of the chosen neighbourhood area in scale (1:500, 1:750 or any appropriate scale).
§  For the layout plan, students should indicate the exact name and dimension (size) of all neighbourhood element observed in the chosen area as follows:
i)                     Movement Network
-          Vehicular Circulation: Type of street (street hierarchy) with its dimensions (size)
-          Pathways for Pedestrian, Cyclist and Disabled
ii)                   Lot Layout
-          Name or type of building (bungalow, semi-d, terrace etc.), lot size and setback, plot ratio, access and road reserve
iii)                  Public Open Space
iv)                  Public Facilties and Amenities
-          Lot size and setback of each community facilities e.g. surau, multipurpose hall, kindergarten or nursery, food court, etc
v)                    Landscape and Street Furniture.

The most interesting part of this project is we had to make a site visit to the place that we had chosen. The place that I had chosen is Siara 81, Sg. Ara, Penang.  We went to the office and I had gained a lot of information about it from the person in-charged.

Here is the Key Plan, Location Plan and Layout Plan of Siara 81.

In this drawings, I had included the key plan (Penang Island), location plan (location of Sungai Ara) and the site plan (Siara 81) . Besides, I had included pictures which show more clearly the public facilities and landscapes in Siara 81. I had also showed the sun orientation, wind movement and also the vehicular circulation of that area.

PROJECT 4 : PRESENTATION DRAWINGS

§  Based on Project 3B (Objects Connection), students are required to produce a plan and elevations (front, right, left and rear) drawings of their wooden comfortable chair.
§  The drawings should be coloured based on the actual condition of their respective comfortable chair (not based on the colour of their structural model).
§  Drawings should be in A3 size and 1:20 scale.
§  Based on their comfortable chair design, each student is also required to produce at least one coloured:
i)                     axonometric drawing (1:20 scale), and
ii)          perspective drawing (with human figure shown)

This is one of the many projects in which I found it interesting. From this project, I had learnt more about plan and elevations. I had learnt how to draw it in a proper way. Besides, I had also learnt about the difference between 1-point perspective, 2-point perspective, 3-point perspective and axonometric drawing, and the technic of drawing all of it. It is going to be very useful for me in the building industry later on.

My first time learning perspective drawing in the studio class.

We are required to draw plans and elevation, axonometric and perspective drawings based on our project 3b wooden chairs (picture above).

PROJECT 3b: OBJECTS CONNECTION: A COMFORTABLE CHAIR

§  In group of 3, students are required to produce a structural model of a wooden L-shape seating object that combines a table and chair(s) (students are free to design and decide the form of each chair/sofa/table/desk)
§  Besides aesthetical factors, students should also consider the function of the furniture as an outdoor comfortable resting spot for HBP community and visitors (as it will be placed near the HBP pond-waterfall).
§  The theme of that seating object is ‘UNITY’, but each group is free to choose their specific concept that is relevant to the stipulated theme.

Project 3b is the first group work / group project for all of us. We were divided into groups by lecturers according to our own major. I was distributed to a group of 3 with two other coursemates , that is Angeline Lee and Ee Wei Xin.

We had met up a couple of time sin order to discuss about the wooden L-shape sating object, which will be located near the HBP pond-waterfall. There are many things that had came into consideration such as what types of chairs etc. Finally, we had decided to do L-shaped chairs with the 'beach chair' concept with one of the chair which is back-to-back attached with backrest to provide more spaces and comfort for everyone.

The final L-Shaped Wooden Chairs that we had made.

This wooden chairs were all made up of wooden sticks. We were emphasizing on the concept of 'simplicity' as the chairs are going to be located at a spot at HBP where students can relax their mind and rest over there. Hence, we greatly agree among ourselves that the chairs shouldn't have complicated designs and our design is the most suitable design for chairs that will be used as a resting and relaxing purposes.

PROJECT 3a : OBJECT CREATION : A FREE-FORM SCULPTURE

§  Each student is required to create an object of a free-from sculpture that can be made from any materials (new or recycled)
§  The theme of the sculpture is ‘HARMONY’, but each student is free to choose their specific concept that is relevant to the stipulated theme.
§  The maximum size of the sculpture is 250mm (width), 300mm (length) and 450mm (height)
§  Each student should also include (freehand) written statement to describe about their sculpture design

Since the theme of this project is harmony, the first thing that came into my mind is the harmony between living things in the world. It can be the harmony between human beings, or harmony between animals and plants, and also harmony between human and other living things.

I love green and the harmony of the environment is always the main issue that I am concerning about. Therefore, I had an idea of doing a sculpture with human and plants interacting in a harmonious situation. Hence, I had decided to use wires to complete my whole Project 3a with a human being playing on a swing which was hung around an old big tree.

These are some of the materials I bought for making the 100% steel wire sculpture. On the right hand side, it is the tree trunk in which I had used thousands and millions of steel wire, rolled and wrapped them together, until the shape like in the picture beside came out.

The tree with the branches.

The 'little human' that I had made.

The completion of my sculpture!!!
(100% made of steel)
I am very satisfied with my sculpture, although it had tortured me a lot especially when dealing it by bending the wires with different thickness. However, no complaints should me made if you want to success as no one can achieve success in life without going through any hardships.

PROJECT 2 : NATURAL & MAN-MADE STRUCTURES ( Project 2b: Man-Made Structure )

  • Students are required to produce a coloured drawing of a man-made structure that can be found around USM Main Campus.
  • Students are also required to do write up (using uppercase architectural lettering) describing the object chosen for drawing.

For this project, there are many interesting places which can be chosen to draw. I decided to choose a bus-stop near Dewan Budaya and the School of Art. I had chosen this man-made sturcture : a bus-stop,  as it is the place where I visit everyday in order to go to HBP, and I am going to meet it very often in my 3-years life in university.

Here is the picture of the bus-stop :

Final coloured drawing with description :

I felt very satisfied in it especially when I tried water-colouring for the very 1st time after 6 years. It was fun and thanks to my all my friends, lecturers (who taught me how to water-colour it) and Youtube (in which I learnt some of the technics there).

PROJECT 2 : NATURAL & MAN-MADE STRUCTURES ( Project 2a: Natural Structure )

§  Students are required to produce a black & white sketch of a natural structure that can be found around USM Main Campus e.g. trees & plants, insects, animals, other creatures etc.
§  The sketch should include the elements of light and shadow.
§  Students are also required to do write up (using ‘uppercase architectural lettering’) describing the object chosen for the sketch.

We are required to sketch and what troubles me the most is the BLACK AND WHITE PART . This is my drawing of a plant called Talathea Lutea, which is found in front of Pusat Sejahtera USM.

PROJECT 1 : ME , MYSELF & I (Project 1b: Personal Logo)

  • Students need to create a ' PERSONAL LOGO ' that best reflects their personality and strengths.
  • Students should also need to clarify the design of the logo by describing the rationales for design elements used (such as line, shape, form, colour etc).
For this section of project, we are required to create our logo for ourselves. Many of my friends are using their names as their logo, by which they created many different styles of art writing of their names with different patterns and colours. As for me, I decided to do something different from them.

I decided to relate my name to the environment. Since environmental issues are the main hot topics nowadays, I had decided to draw a green tree behind my name in order to show how much I care about the nature and to alert all my fellow friends of the importance of  conserving and preserving the green trees around us.

There are a few ideas of mine.

FINAL PRODUCT :

LOVE GREEN , LOVE LIFE
